DEMASKING THE BRIDGES - A SOUNDWALK IN DUMBO

Demasking The Bridges was a soundwalk that had been exploring the small triangle between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO. Sounds from subway cars and auto traffic on the two bridges dominate the area. These sounds "mask" the other sounds and create a very dense soundscape. By walking, listening closely, attuning themselves to the architecture and performing listening exercises, participants experienced the Masking Effect, a psycho-acoustic phenomenon, and slowly uncovered sonic events as they unfolded in the neighborhood.
